| 国名の順番が日英語とも日本→アメリカの順になっているのは，英語の正式名称のアルファベット順で決まったものと思われる．それにしても，インターネットで検索すると，the United States of America and Japan となっているものもある．どういうことだろう． |

| further また〔さらに〕 encourage 促進する〔奨励する〕 closer 一層緊密な them 両国 promote 助長する〔促進する〕 well-being 福祉〔福利〕 their countries それぞれの国 ※条約文でやっかいなのは，似たような意味の単語が続いて出てくること．訳し分けたいが，無理に訳し分けようとすると日本語が不自然になり，同じ訳語ですませてしまうことも多い．一方，一度訳し分けをしたら，同じ区別を訳文全体で一貫して行なう必要があり，ある箇所での訳し分けと別の箇所での訳し分けがバッティングしてしまい，コンシステントにはできないこともある． ここの場合，encourageとpromoteがその場合であるが，私の語感では「助長」はあまりいいことには使わないので，私なら「奨励」「促進」とするところ． ただし，この後者の場合，promoteの目的語が「条件」なので「向上・改善」のほうが日本語としてはしっくりくるのではないか．これらの訳語は英和辞典のpromoteを見ても出てこないが，英英辞典にある"help the progress of"に該当すると言えるかもしれない． ※これまた個人的な語感では「福祉」は社会福祉（社会的弱者を助けるためのサービス）の意味に使うことが多く，well-being（満足のいく状態）とは異なるような気がした．しかし，国語辞典を見ると，「祉」という漢字は「さいわい」を表わす由で，『自由之理』に「人民の福祉を増さんが為に」という使用例も出ている．これからすると，well-beingの訳を「福祉」とするのは実は邪道どころか本道であることがわかる． |

| settle 解決する they それぞれ may be (involved) (関係する)ことのある〔かもしれない〕 in such a manner that ... …（しない）ように (peace) and (security) and (justice) (平和)及び(安全)並びに(正義) endanger 危うくする ※「in such a manner that .... are not endangered …を危うくしないように」と，受け身を能動態で訳している．日本語では主語を出さずにすむために使えるテクニック． ※日本語の法律文では「ならびに」は「および」よりも大きな区分を表わすことになっている．上記の「平和及び安全並びに正義」は，単なる３つの並列ではなく，「（平和と安全）と正義」とう階層構造を読み込んだ訳になっている． ちなみに，orに対しては「または」よりも小さな区分を「もしくは」で表わすことになっている． |

| their それぞれの force 武力 against 対する territorial integrity 領土保全 inconsistent 両立しない refrain 慎む manner 方法 ※use of force against A or in any other manner inconsistent with B は直訳すれば Aに対する，また，Bと両立しない他のあらゆる武力の行使を となる．anyを「あらゆる」としてしまうと，「いかなる…も」とういニュアンスが消えてallと同じになってしまうが，このin...を名詞にかかる形容詞句として訳そうとする限りやむを得ない．これを副詞句として訳すと少しは自由度が出てきて，「いかなる」を使えるようになる．また，「武力の行使」を前のほうに出すこともできる． Aに対して，また，Bと両立しない他のいかなる方法においても武力の行使を 武力の行使を，Aに対して，また，Bと両立しない他のいかなる方法においても 一般に，英語では名詞の後ろに次々に修飾語句が続くことがあり，それを日本語にする際，いちいち名詞の前からかかる修飾句として訳しているのでは，きわめて読みにくい日本語ができあがる．その際，原文の語順をいかに無理なく保存することができるかが，翻訳者の腕の見せどころの一つである． 実際の条文ではもう少し高級な技を使って次のように処理している． 武力の行使を，Aに対するものも，また，Bと両立しない他のいかなる方法によるものも， このように「Aに対するもの」「Bと両立しない…もの」のように「もの」を補って，それぞれ「武力の行使」と同じ名詞句としているのである．場合によってよしあしはさまざまだが，名詞句であれば述語の「慎む」にそのまま続けて読むことができ，「武力の行使を…慎む」の「…」の部分が長いときには読みやすい日本語ができる． こうしたテクニックを使ってはいるが，条文のこの箇所は日本語としてはかなり読みにくい部類に属する．法律文には詳しくないが，私がこれを英和翻訳の課題として与えられたとしたら，次のように訳すところだろう． 武力による威嚇または武力の行使は，いかなる国に対してであれその領土保全や政治的独立を損なうものも，また，なんらかの形で国際連合の目的と相容れないものも，慎むことを約束する ちなみに，「武力行使を」でなく「武力公使は」としているが，「を」の代わりに「は」を使うことは直訳調の印象を薄れさせるのにしばしば有用である． |
| The Parties will endeavor in concert with other peace-loving countries to strengthen the United Nations so that its mission of maintaining international peace and security may be discharged more effectively. |

| The Parties will contribute toward the further development of peaceful and friendly international relations by strengthening their free institutions, by bringing about a better understanding of the principles upon which these institutions are founded, and by promoting conditions of stability and well-being. |
| 締約国は、その自由な諸制度を強化することにより、これらの制度の基礎をなす原則の理解を促進することにより、並びに安定及び福祉の条件を助長することによって、平和的かつ友好的な国際関係の一層の発展に貢献する。 |
| contribute 貢献する further 一層の development 発展 strengthen 強化する institution 制度 found 基礎をなす ※the principles upon which these institutions are founded を直訳して「これらの制度が基礎をおかれるところの原則」としたのでは翻訳調の見本のようなもの．「これらの制度の基礎をなす原則」は簡潔でよい．英語ではbe foundedという受け身が普通に使われるが，日本語では「基礎をなす」を能動態のまま使うのが普通である． ※bring about a better understanding を直訳して「よりよき理解をもたらす」としたのでは読みにくい．「理解を促進する」はうまい訳といえる． ※「安定及び福祉の条件を助長する」の箇所で，ちゃんと第一条と一貫した訳語を用いていることにも着目． |

| The Parties will consult together from time to time regarding the implementation of this Treaty, and, at the request of either Party, whenever the security of Japan or international peace and security in the Far East is threatened. |
| 締約国は、この条約の実施に関して随時協議し、また、日本国の安全又は極東における国際の平和及び安全に対する脅威が生じたときはいつでも、いずれか一方の締約国の要請により協議する。 |

| Each Party recognizes that an armed attack against either Party in the territories under the administration of Japan would be dangerous to its own peace and safety and declares that it would act to meet the common danger in accordance with its constitutional provisions and processes. |
| 各締約国は、日本国の施政の下にある領域における、いずれか一方に対する武力攻撃が、自国の平和及び安全を危うくするものであることを認め、自国の憲法上の規定及び手続に従って共通の危険に対処するように行動することを宣言する。 |

| This Treaty shall remain in force until in the opinion of the Governments of Japan and the United States of America there shall have come into force such United Nations arrangements as will satisfactorily provide for the maintenance of international peace and security in the Japan area. |
| この条約は、日本区域における国際の平和及び安全の維持のため十分な定めをする国際連合の措置が効力を生じたと日本国政府及びアメリカ合衆国政府が認める時まで効力を有する。 |
| shall （訳出せず） remain （訳出せず） in force 効力を有して in the opinion of A … Aが…と認める come into force 効力を生じる〔発効する〕 arrangement 措置 satisfactorily 十分に provide 定めをする〔備えをする〕 area 区域 ※「in the opinion of …」を直訳せず「…認める」と訳出したのはうまい． ※名詞句を節として訳すテクニックは第六条で触れたが，逆に「副詞＋動詞」を「形容詞＋名詞」にしてしまうと表現が引き締まる場合もある．ここではsuch United Nations arrangements as will satisfactorily provide for ... を直訳の「…に満足に備えるような国際連合の措置」とするのではなく，「…のため十分な定めをする国際連合の措置」としている． ※なお，arrangement が第六条では「取り決め」と訳されていたが，ここでは「措置」と訳されている．これら２箇所のarrangementをこのように訳し分けたのはそれぞれの文脈からして正しい判断と言える．その際，他の箇所でmeasureを「措置」と訳しているのとバッティングしてしまうが，やむを得ない．これにより誤解が生じるおそれはないものと思われる． |
